CORE SUBJECTS
Reading/Language Arts: Fourth graders are expected to become independent readers and writers. Students are expected to be able to interpret and analyze what they have read and be able to respond to what they have read in writing. Students must be able to answer questions in complete sentences by rephrasing the question. They must be able to support their answers with details and examples from the story or passage they have read. Students are expected to be able to construct paragraphs consisting of a main idea sentence, detail sentences, and a concluding sentence. As the year progresses, students will be able to combine paragraphs into well-constructed essays. To achieve these goals, our school district follows the Common Core Learning Standards, New York State modules, and the Houghton-Mifflin reading series, Journeys.
Math: Our school district uses the GoMath program for mathematics instruction and is driven by the Common Core Learning Standards. Fourth graders are expected to commit ALL addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts to memory. Students are expected to be able to analyze and interpret information to solve a problem. It is essential that students become proficient at solving word problems in fourth grade using the strategies they have been taught.
Social Studies: Fourth grade social studies consists of the geography and history of New York State. We use the MacMillan-McGraw-Hill series. You can find information and support at macmillanmh.com.
Science: Fourth grade has three science units. Our first unit is Animal Studies, the second is Electricity, and finally, we end the year with Sinking and Floating. Our district has also adopted a new health and wellness program called “The Great Body Shop”.
